Astro Turf

Astro Turf is a brand for artificial grass / artificial turf. Though the term is a registered trademark, it is sometimes used as a generic description for any kind of artificial grass. The original AstroTurf product was a short pile synthetic turf while the current products incorporate modern features such as anti microbial protection, rubber backing systems and nylon yarn fibers. Astro Turf is a synthetic material, machine manufactured from polypropylene or polyethylene. The most widely used type is polyethylene which is tufted to the appropriate length and lubricated with silicone onto a rubberised base. Once installed it can then be coated with silica sand which keeps the fibers looking skywards and provides the surface with the right bounce and give for its function.

Newer additions are longer piled with a curled infill which does away with the need to infill with kiln dried sand and are more suitable for domestic usage.

Artificial grass or Astro Turf as it more commonly referred to was originally introduced in 1966 in the Astrodome stadium in Houston Texas USA. Designed primarily for sports, the short sand filled pile products although perfect for this kind of heavy usage was not very forgiving to the flesh or ideal for domestic use.

New modern day designs for the domestic garden have helped to change this and the way fake grass is now viewed. Artificial grass is now becoming the latest must have for the garden in the UK. In past several years the texture and realism of their looks had been greatly improved, some of these new products are so realistic in their appearance, they are very hard to distinguish from the real thing.

Even famous football players have been known to prefer the use of artificial grass for their gardens over having a normal traditional grassed lawn. With the hectic life style of today’s modern living, many families find it both difficult and time consuming trying to keep up with regular maintenance in the garden, mainly mowing the lawn.
